Poland and Estonia continue their hunt for a spot in this summer’s EUROs this week when they collide in a playoff match. Both nations come into this clash with realistic hopes of reaching the major tournament in June, but which country will manage to keep their dreams alive?
There will be pressure on Poland when the race for a spot in the Euros resumes on Thursday. Poland will be heavily favoured in this showdown against Estonia, as they look to respond following a miserable Group E campaign. The nation has earned qualification to each of the last four EUROs, but they have crashed out in the group stage on three occasions.
Their performances in the group stage of qualification was extremely disappointing after landing just three wins from their eight matches. Poland also suffered three defeats in Group E, and they won just two of their four home matches. Defensively, they will need to improve after allowing ten goals in the group stage.
Estonia will be the massive outsiders in the betting for this playoff showdown. The nation have never previously gained qualification to a major tournament, and they have failed to win a qualifying match in the previous two editions of the qualifying campaign.
They come into this match after picking up just one point from their eight matches in Group F. Over that period, they suffered seven defeats, and netted a group-low of just two goals. Like their rivals, they also endured defensive issues throughout the group stage of qualifying, conceding a high of 22. A significant improvement will be required if they are to have any chance of reaching the Euros.
Estonia have recorded just one win from their nine previous matches against Poland. However, that success was achieved in the latest clash between the nations in August 2012. That defeat ended a six-game winning run for Poland in this fixture, which stretched between 1926 and 2008.
Poland appear to be very challenging to overlook in the betting for this fixture on Thursday. Estonia were very weak throughout the group stage in qualifying, and this looks perfectly set up for Poland to progress through to the final. However, the Poles will be tested much more in the final against either Wales or Finland next Tuesday.
