Paraguay vs Uruguay Prediction: World Cup Qualifier on 28.01.2022

Two-time world champions Uruguay look to be in a spot of bother when it comes to qualifying for the 2022 World Cup later this year. They desperately need a win this week against Paraguay to keep their hopes of an automatic qualifying spot alive.

World Cup Qualifier Preview

Uruguay have only failed to reach the World Cup finals once in the past five tournaments, as they missed out on a place in the tournament in 2006. Since then, they have finished fourth and fifth in the competition, with the latter of those finishes coming four years ago in Russia.

However, if they are to continue their impressive record at the World Cup later this year, then they will need to have an improvement in their form. Uruguay are currently seventh in the standings, having won 16 points from the 14 games that they have played. They are one point off fourth-placed Colombia, and seven away from Ecuador, who sit third. Recent form is a huge concern for Uruguay, as they have lost their last three qualifying fixtures. The most recent of those was a 3-0 loss against Bolivia in November.

Paraguay last played in the World Cup in 2010, as they made it through to the quarterfinals of the competition. However, if they are to make the finals in Qatar this year, then they will need to improve, and hope results go their way.

Paraguay are currently ninth in the standings, but are just four points behind Peru and Colombia, who sit fifth and fourth, respectively. Their inferior goal difference means that they have a disadvantage in the race for qualifying spots, and defeat in this fixture could effectively end their hopes of making it to Qatar. Paraguay are winless in their last four, but did play out a 0-0 draw against Colombia in their last fixture.

Paraguay vs Uruguay Head to Head

Paraguay haven’t beaten Uruguay since a World Cup qualifier in 2007. Since that victory, they are winless in their last nine against their opponents this weekend. Uruguay have picked up victories in three of the last four fixtures, including their latest win which was a 1-0 success in the Copa America in June 2021.

Paraguay vs Uruguay Prediction

Uruguay and Paraguay have both endured winless runs in qualification over recent months. There’s little doubt that Uruguay have the better players in their squad, and for that reason, we could see them edging to a 1-0 win this week.
