It has been an excellent campaign for Marseille both in France and Europe to this point. However, they will be hoping for a piece of silverware to show for their hard work throughout the campaign. Their best opportunity seems to be in the Europa Conference League, and they hold a slender advantage following the first leg.
It is advantage Marseille as we come into the second leg of this tie. The French side looked strong in the first leg between the sides last week, as Marseille picked up a 2-1 victory. Both goals that they scored came in the first half, with Gerson and Dimitri Payet doing the damage. However, there would have been a slight disappointment that they weren’t able to build on that advantage in the second period.
Instead, the second half was a nervy affair, as PAOK got back into the game three minutes after the restart, as Omar El Kaddouri pulled a goal back. That was their only shot on target in the game, but Marseille weren’t able to raise their game as it seemed as though their confidence was knocked. They will also be without Gerson for this second leg, as he was sent off in the fourth minute of injury time.
However, any danger that the Marseille confidence may have been knocked seemed to have been batted away in their latest league fixture. They back up that European victory with a strong 2-0 home success in Ligue 1 against Montpellier. Bamba Dieng and Cengis Under scored the goals in that home success.
Meanwhile, PAOK’s game this past weekend was postponed, which means that they should be the fresher of the two sides coming into this important second leg in Macedonia.
This will be just the second time that Marseille and PAOK have squared off. The previous fixture between the sides only came last week, as Marseille managed to hold on to a 2-1 win against their rivals.
PAOK are likely to have more of the ball than they did seven days ago, but the challenge ahead of them is still a big one. Marseille have great deal of experience within their squad, and I still struggle to see past them claiming the win on the road and easing into the semi-finals of the competition.
