The Women’s World Cup action continues in Group F on Saturday, as Jamaica will be looking to build on their draw against France when they take on Panama. Panama will be hoping for a response after being brushed aside by Brazil in their opening match.
Jamaica provided one of the shocks of the opening week at the Women’s World Cup, as they managed to hold European giants France to a 0-0 draw in the opening round of matches in Group F. That stalemate has given them an unlikely chance of escaping the group, and a victory in their second match against Panama could put them on course to take one of the qualifying spots for the next round of the competition.
It was nothing less than Jamaica deserved following their efforts in the opening match, as they defended excellently to keep France at arms-length throughout the 90 minutes. It was a memorable achievement for Jamaica, as it was the first point that they had picked up at the World Cup after losing in each of their three matches at the tournament four years ago.
Panama will be aware that they now have a very slim chance of reaching the next round after they were put to the sword by a dominant Brazil in their opening match in Group F. The Central American side conceded twice in either half, and could muster just two shots on target in response against a rampant Brazilian side.
The defeat leaves Panama at the bottom of the group standings after the opening round of matches, and it means that they have now lost each of their last three internationals without scoring a goal.
This will be the first meeting between these nations at the World Cup. The standout recent clash between the teams came at the 2018 CONCACAF Women’s Championship, as the sides met in the match for third place. Jamaica came out on top in a penalty shootout following a 2-2 draw after extra time.
Jamaica were very impressive defensively against France, but their attacking players will likely take the limelight in this second group stage match. We fully expect Jamaica to land a first ever win at the World Cup this Saturday.
