Real Madrid will be looking to chip away at the Barcelona advantage at the top of the standings this weekend, as they travel to Osasuna. The hosts will be looking to end a four-game losing streak against the reigning world champions.
It has been a productive couple of weeks for Real Madrid, as they recently travelled to Morocco to land a fifth Club World Cup honour. However, the attention turns back to serious competitions over the next seven days or so, with Real Madrid facing an important fixture in La Liga on Saturday before taking on Liverpool in the Champions League next week.
The reigning Spanish champions currently sit a distant second in the La Liga standings, as they have won just once in their previous three matches. They will be looking for an immediate return to form in the league after they were beaten in their previous away game by Mallorca before they travelled to Africa to try and win the Club World Cup. The pressure will be on Carlo Ancelotti and his side in the second half of the campaign.
Osasuna is enjoying a fine season in La Liga this term, as they currently sit in the top half of the standings. However, their form has eluded them in recent weeks, and they come into this home fixture against the reigning Spanish champions having gone four without a victory in La Liga.
They were at least able to avoid defeat in their previous match in Spain, as they played out a 0-0 draw against Valladolid. However, in truth, they never looked like they were chasing the victory in that fixture, and they always appeared happy to take a point from the game on the road.
Two of the previous four matches between these two sides have ended in draws. The latest of those came in October, as Osasuna was able to battle back to claim a 1-1 draw in Madrid. However, Osasuna hasn’t beaten Real since May 2009, with that 2-1 success coming in their home fixture that season.
Real Madrid will need to hit the ground running when they return to action in La Liga this week. However, we can’t see them blowing Osasuna away, which means a scrappy 1-0 win for the visitors could be the most likely result.
