West Ham will once again be targeting European success this term after landing victory in the Europa Conference League last season. They have made a dominant start to Group A, and they will be chasing a third straight victory when they travel to Olympiacos on Thursday.
David Moyes has once again approached the Europa League with the intention of winning the competition. West Ham have made a dominant start to the tournament this term after winning each of their opening two matches in the competition this season.
Olympiacos are yet to hit their groove in the tournament to this point, as they have failed to land a victory across their opening two matches. The Greek giants come into this match with one point on the board after playing out a draw with Backa Topola on matchday two in Group A a few weeks ago.
It would be a huge concern that Olympiacos come into this match on a long winless sequence in the Europa League, as they have gone eleven matches without a victory. Over that period, they have suffered eight defeats, and have picked up just three points. In fact, this is their longest winless run in a European competition in their history.
West Ham have been experts in the group stage across the Europa League and Europa Conference League in recent seasons. That is evident from the fact that they have won each of their last eight group stage fixtures in European competitions. Only Arsenal have won more fixtures in sequence in the group stage, as the Gunners landed ten wins between October 2020 and October 2022.
This will be the first meeting between these sides since the last 16 tie in the 1965-66 Cup Winners’ Cup. That clash saw the Hammers progress with a 6-2 aggregate victory over two legs. Meanwhile, the Greek side are winless in their previous six home matches against English opposition.
West Ham have been prolific in the group stage of European competitions over the last three seasons, and there has been little evidence to suggest that the winning run will come to an end this week. Therefore, the preference is for the Hammers to claim a third straight success in Group A.
