It will be third against fourth in Ligue 1 on Wednesday evening, as Nice welcome Marseille. A position in the Champions League places will be the reward for whichever side can take maximum points in the game.
PSG’s recent slip in form has opened the door for others to lay down a challenge, and two of the best placed sides in that regard meet in the French top tier on Wednesday. Nice certainly are in the best form, while Marseille will be looking for a second win in six.
Nice are currently above Marseille in the standings, as they sit in third, just two points off second-place Lens. However, a nine point difference to PSG already looks to be a mountain to climb. Nice have won six of the ten games that they have played this season, but have been beaten on two occasions.
They have won three in four, which includes a recent success against Lyon at the weekend. It was a fascinating end to that contest, as Youcef Atal, Andy Delfort and Evann Guessand scored in the last ten minutes to secure a famous comeback from 2-0 down to take the points.
Marseille themselves are in a strong position to challenge for a Champions League place this season. However, they will need an upturn in form, having won just once in their last five outings in Ligue 1. They are just a point behind Nice, but defeat on Wednesday along with results going against them in other fixtures, could see them drop out of the European places altogether.
They certainly should take confidence out of their game at the weekend, as they managed to hold PSG to a draw. It was a 0-0 outcome, but Marseille will likely be expected to chase the game more on Wednesday.
Marseille have won double the number of games than Nice in fixtures between these sides in recent history. The visitors have won 18 times, while Nice have won nine. Marseille had won seven in a row before the second meeting between the sides last season, which was won 3-0 by Nice.
Nice have the better form coming into this Wednesday fixture, and will be boosted by their first win against Marseille in five years towards the end of last season. A second straight win against Marseille could come this week.
