One of the most engrossing ties in the Europa Conference League will reach its conclusion on Thursday. Nice and FC Basel shared four goals in their thrilling first leg last week, but only one of the teams will be able to progress through to the next round of the competition.
There were few more entertaining games on the continent last week than the opening leg clash between FC Basel and Nice at St Jakob-Park. The sides played out a dramatic 2-2 draw, with Basel heading to France with the hope that they can still reach the last four of the competition. The Swiss side were made to work incredibly hard to remain in contention, despite taking a lead after just 26 minutes following Zeki Amdouni’s effort.
Nice turned the game on its head before the half time break, with Terem Moffi netting twice for the visitors. His second effort was netted in the first minute of injury time at the end of the first half. Nice appeared to be heading toward a hard-fought win on the road, until Amdouni added his second of the game from the penalty spot in the 71st minute.
The French side looked like the most realistic winner after that equalising goal, as they continued to dominate the possession. However, they just couldn’t find the way through to grab a third game on the road, which would have handed them a massive advantage ahead of the second leg.
Basel will be the underdogs to progress through to the next round, but they showed throughout the first leg that they have quality in the final third that can prove dangerous to the Nice defence. But, they will need to be much more defensively solid for this return match.
This will only be the second time that Nice and FC Basel have clashed in a European fixture. The first occasion came in the opening leg between the sides, as they shared four goals in a 2-2 thriller in Switzerland.
We once again expect to see goals in this second leg showdown between Basel and Nice. However, we find it very challenging to look past the home side, who should be boosted by playing in front of their home fans, as they bid to secure a spot in the final four of the Europa Conference League.
