According to a Bloomberg report, ONEXIM Sports & Entertainment, which is owned by Russian businessman Mikhail Prokhorov, plans to close the Nassau Coliseum arena indefinitely as the company attempts to find investors who will take on its remaining debt.
ONEXIM is ready to transfer the lease to the arena to potential investors if they accept about $100 million in debt. According to an agency source, the company may also cede the lease to its creditors.
Nassau Coliseum was the New York Islanders’ home arena from 1972 to 2015. After 42 seasons at the arena, the Islanders moved to Barclays Center in Brooklyn. However, starting from the 2018/19 season, the team began to hold some of their home matches at Nassau Coliseum once again.
As was reported earlier, the Islanders are due to move to a new arena in 2021, when the construction of their new ice palace (currently named the Belmont Park Arena) is completed.
