One of the standout fixtures in the Premier League this weekend will take place at St. James’ Park, as Chelsea look to continue their progressive run of performances when they visit Newcastle. The hosts will be looking for a response after falling to defeat in their previous fixture.
It looks set to be a testing period in the season for Newcastle, as Eddie Howe’s side struggle with injury issues across the field. The Magpies come into the resumption of domestic action sitting seventh in the standings, but they could climb up to sixth with a return to winning ways this weekend. However, they were disappointing before the international break when losing 2-0 against Bournemouth.
Chelsea will come into this fixture with newfound belief behind them, as they have come through a testing run of matches having avoided defeat. Their most recent match saw them play out a thriller against Manchester City, with Cole Palmer scoring the latest equaliser in a 4-4 draw at Stamford Bridge against the reigning champions.
Newcastle’s home record could be vitally important if they are to remain in the hunt for a European spot at this stage of the season. However, their chances will certainly be enhanced based on the fact that they have won their last four at St. James’ Park without conceding a goal. But, they haven’t won five on the bounce at home without conceding since February 1907.
Chelsea have certainly looked more cohesive in recent weeks, and that is highlighted by the fact that they have already won more points against sides above them in the standings than they did throughout the previous campaign. They have also netted exactly four goals in three of their last five league matches.
The Magpies avoided defeat in both Premier League meetings with Chelsea last season. That came after losing seven of the previous eight. Newcastle haven’t gone three without defeat against the Blues since September 1995. However, Chelsea have lost on 13 separate occasions away from home during the Premier League era against Newcastle.
Injury issues are catching up to Newcastle at this stage of the season, and this could be another testing weekend for the Magpies. For that reason, we could see Chelsea’s progression continuing at St. James’ Park, as we will be siding with an away win.
