The second round of matches in Group A at the Women’s World Cup take place on Tuesday. It was a memorable opening night for one of the host nations, as New Zealand upset the odds to land victory over Norway. They could effectively secure their passage through to the knockout round in Wellington with a victory over the Philippines.
New Zealand made an early statement at the World Cup in the first game at the competition, as they recorded a famous 1-0 win over Norway at Eden Park. Hannah Wilkinson was the match-winner in that opening match, as she netted the winner early in the second half to stun the Norwegians. New Zealand defended excellently to secure maximum points, and they will now feel as though they have an excellent chance of progression.
However, there are a number of trends in their favour ahead of the second match, as four of the previous eight World Cup hosts have won each of their opening two matches at the competition. Confidence will also be high after their win over Norway, which was their first success in 15 outings at the competition.
There will be pressure on the Philippines this week, as their stay at the World Cup could come to an end on Tuesday. The Asian nation was easily beaten in their opening match at the competition, as they fell to a 2-0 loss against Switzerland.
It was one of their better performances on the global stage, but they still have a lack of quality in the final third, which will continue to hold them back against the best nations in the competition. Regardless, a win in Wellington could give them an excellent chance of securing progression through to the next round.
This will be the first clash between these two nations. However, New Zealand are winless in four previous encounters against Asian nations at the World Cup. They have lost three matches over that period, which includes defeats against China and Japan.
There is an expectation that the hosts have put themselves into an excellent position to gain qualification through to the knockout round. We expect them to build on their win over Norway with a second straight success in Wellington on Tuesday.
