The Netherlands continue their Women’s World Cup campaign in the round of 16 this weekend, as they take on South Africa for a place in the quarterfinals. Both nations will come into this match in good confidence, but which side will progress through to the last eight?
The Netherlands upset the odds to reach the round of 16 at the Women’s World Cup as Group E winners. It was a stunning finish to the group stage, as the Dutch landed a mesmeric 7-0 win over Vietnam, while the United States could only play out a 0-0 draw against Portugal. The Dutch were excellent throughout the group stage, with their only dropped points coming following a 1-1 draw against the United States on matchday two.
However, their forward players were in excellent form in their final match, with Jill Roord and Esmee Brugts both scoring twice in their big 7-0 win. The victory was their biggest ever success at the competition, and was the biggest win at the World Cup since USA’s 13-0 victory over Thailand in 2019.
There was also a dramatic end to proceedings in Group G, as South Africa defied all expectations to jump from fourth in the standings to second. It was a stunning performance by the African nation, with their date with destiny in the round of 16 set up by Thembi Kgartiana’s winner in the second minute of injury time to record a 3-2 win over Italy.
That victory saw South Africa become only the third nation from the continent to reach the knockout stage of the World Cup following Nigeria and Cameroon. Their never say die attitude will once again make them a very serious competitor against the Netherlands this weekend.
This will be the first meeting between South Africa and the Netherlands at the Women’s World Cup. But, the African nation has now won once in four clashes against sides from Europe at the competition.
South Africa has been one of the most enjoyable teams to watch at the World Cup this summer. However, we believe that their journey Down Under will come to an end against the Dutch, with the Netherlands looking good value to secure a 3-1 win.
