Competitive action in Group E continues on Sunday, as the two main contenders for a place in the next round lock horns. However, both the Netherlands and Portugal will be aware of the importance of winning this match with showdowns against the United States to come after matchday one.
The Netherlands could be one of the nations that have been overlooked in the outright betting at the World Cup this summer. They were losing finalists in the 2019 edition of the tournament, eventually falling to a 2-0 defeat against the United States. The Dutch has an excellent record against European opposition at the World Cup, as they have won each of their last two clashes without conceding a goal.
This summer will only be their third appearance at the World Cup after making their debut at the competition in 2015. However, they have managed to escape the group stage in each of the previous two editions. Their recent form appears solid on paper, as they have registered back-to-back wins against Poland and Belgium. However, defeats against Germany and Austria could show their limitations for when the knockout round gets underway.
Portugal will be making their debut at the World Cup this summer after gaining qualification by winning ten from 13 matches. They played at a second major tournament at last summer’s EUROs, but they exited the tournament in the group stage after failing to win in three matches.
But, Portugal could easily be one of the most progressive women’s teams in the tournament this year, as they have held their own against well-respected nations already this year. That includes narrow defeats against Japan and Norway, and holding the reigning European champions England to a 0-0 draw.
This will be the ninth clash between Portugal and the Netherlands. The Dutch have won seven of the previous encounters, which includes victories in each of the last five. However, it promises to be a tight match, as six of the last eight have been won by a single-goal margin.
This is a huge match in the context of the second spot in Group E, with the winning nation putting themselves into an excellent position. Portugal has impressed in recent months, but we see the Dutch getting over the line with a 2-1 win in Dunedin.
