Napoli will be hoping to get their season back on track when they are in action in Serie A this weekend. Genoa will be the visitors to Naples, as the away team chase a third victory in five league matches in Italy.
Napoli’s title defence is already over this term, as they are unlikely to bridge the gap between themselves and Napoli. However, a finish in the European spots could yet see them end the campaign on a high point. The Italian side currently eight points off the top four, but they are just five off the top five positions.
The reigning champions come into this round after seeing their three-game unbeaten run come to an end. Last weekend, they were outclassed at the San Siro by AC Milan, with Napoli failing to produce many clear scoring opportunities after falling a goal behind after 25 minutes. But, this looks a slightly more winnable game on paper.
Genoa will also be looking for a strong second half of the season, as they are currently down in 12th in the standings. However, a run of victories could put them on course for a top half finish in 2023-24. The Italian side come into this round after suffering just one defeat across their last five matches in the competition.
But, that defeat was suffered in their most recent fixture, as they conceded four times in a 4-1 home loss against Atalanta. It could be worth mentioning that two of the goals that they allowed were netted in second half injury time as Genoa were chasing an equalising effort.
Napoli have bossed their previous encounters against Genoa, winning 17 of the last 26 meetings. Over the same period, Genoa have recorded just two wins, with seven matches ending in draws. Napoli have won two of the previous three, and they are unbeaten in home matches against their rivals in over ten years.
Genoa haven’t enjoyed their visits to Naples in recent memory, but they do come into this showdown in solid form. Given the form of the home side, it wouldn’t be the strangest outcome to see the away side pick up at least a point on Saturday. Therefore, the slight preference is for this match to end in a tie.
