Two of the teams in the race for a Champions League position in Serie A will collide on Saturday. Napoli will have the home field advantage, as they look to stretch their unbeaten sequence when they come up against Atalanta at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona.
It hasn’t exactly been the season that Napoli would have been hoping for this term, as their race to defend the Serie A title has ended before the business end of the campaign has got underway. The team from Naples comes into this round of matches sitting seventh, but they could yet salvage their season by finishing in the Champions League positions.
Napoli are nine points off the top four positions in the competition, and they come into this round after avoiding defeat in each of their last five matches. However, they have played out draws in each of their previous two in the competition. Their most recent draw was played out against Inter Milan, with Juan Jesus netted a dramatic equaliser at the San Siro with nine minutes remaining.
Atalanta appeared to be in pole position for a Champions League finish when play got back underway following the winter break, but their poor recent form in the competition has seen them drop to sixth. They now have a lot to make up on fourth-place Bologna, as they sit seven points behind their rivals.
Atalanta come into this weekend after failing to win in their last four matches in the competition, with two defeats having been inflicted over that period. Their latest outing in the league came at the start of March where they battled back to earn a 2-2 draw against Juventus away from home. Teun Koopmeiners netted both goals in that tie.
Napoli boasts a stunning record in this fixture after winning each of their last four league matches against Atalanta. That includes a 2-1 success in the reverse clash this term. Atalanta’s most recent league win against Napoli was achieved away from home in Naples in December 2021.
Napoli’s dominant record in this fixture is very challenging to overlook when it comes to assessing the most likely outcome on Saturday. Therefore, we will be siding with the defending champions picking up maximum points in Naples this weekend.
