It is a quiet weekend in terms of club action around Europe, with domestic action in France taking centre stage. The round of 16 of the French Cup gets underway on Friday evening, with Nantes playing host to Brest at the Beaujoire Stadium.
Both Nantes and Brest are in solid enough positions in the league standings to make a good run at the French Cup this season. Nantes are sitting ninth overall, and are two points outside of the European places. Their recent form has also been relatively strong, as they have won three times in their last five games.
Nantes beat Lorient 4-2 in their most recent fixture last weekend, with Wilem Geubbels, Osman Bukari and Andrei Girotto among the scorers. In the last round of the French Cup, Nantes saw off Vitre with a 2-0 win. It was a controlled performance by the hosts in that fixtures, as they had 66% of the ball and registered 23 shots.
Ludovic Bias scored the opening goal after 25 minutes, while the points were wrapped up with just over 20 remaining on the clock as Geubbels continued his hot-streak in front of goal.
Brest come into this break from league action in 13th place in the Ligue 1 standings. They have won just five of the 22 games that they have played this season, but remain nine clear of the drop zone in the French top-flight.
Brest have certainly looked vulnerable in recent weeks, as they have won just once in their last five. However, that sole victory did come last weekend. They picked up a massive win in the last round of the French Cup, as Brest beat Montpellier 3-0 at home. Steve Mounie and Romain Faivre both scored penalties in the comfortable success.
Nantes have won the last four meetings against Brest in all competitions. They picked up a 3-1 victory in this fixture earlier in the Ligue 1 season. Brest’s last win against Nantes came in Ligue 2 back in 2010. Nantes have scored ten goals in their last three matches against Brest.
The advantage certainly stands with Nantes coming into this French Cup showdown, as they have a dominant record overall against their opponents. We can’t see that positive record ending this weekend, and expect Nantes to progress through to the next round.
