Monaco will be looking to go four games unbeaten in Ligue 1 this weekend when they travel to Montpellier. The hosts will be looking for a positive result themselves as they look to end a two-match losing run and move back into contention for a European finish this term.
Monaco are primed for a challenge for a European finish this season. The French giants are sixth in the standings coming into this round of fixtures, as they have won two of their last three, and three of their previous five. There is just a point between themselves and fifth-placed Rennes, while Monaco also find themselves four behind Marseille, who occupy the final Champions League spot.
Recent form is a big plus for Monaco though, as they have put in some of their best performances of the season over their last three games. Monaco were held by Nantes in their last game on the road, but came storming back in their latest fixture as they hammered Clermont Foot 4-0 at home last weekend. Wissam Ben Yedder scored a brace in that big victory, while Sofiane Diop and Caio Henrique Oliveira Silva also scored.
Montpellier’s season seems to be just drifting along at present, as they are moving further away from the European places, but still look more than safe in the battle to stay in the division. They are ninth in the standings, and will be keen to end a two-game losing run in the league.
Montpellier were beaten 3-1 by Strasbourg last weekend, while they were handed a second straight defeat in Ligue 1 on Wednesday night. Troyes were the victors in the latest fixture, winning 1-0. Montpellier have had players sent off in their previous two, which means discipline could be an area for concern.
Monaco have won their last two against Montpellier in Ligue 1. They have scored six goals in total in those fixtures, and have conceded three times. Montpellier are winless in four against their rivals this weekend, with their last victory coming back in October 2019.
Montpellier look to be dropping at a rapid speed in the Ligue 1 standings. They could be about to lose a third straight game in the league this weekend, as we expect Monaco to pick up a comfortable victory. We would take a chance on a 2-0 victory.
