Albania’s date with destiny arrives on Friday, as the European nation will look to secure their passage through to the EURO 2024 finals. A victory over Moldova could secure their spot in Germany, and they come into this matchday seven fixture in excellent recent form.
It has been an excellent period in Albanian football, and they could achieve a monumental feat this week if they are able to register a victory on the road against Moldova. The national side has only managed to gain qualification for one previous edition of the EUROs, reaching the group stage in the 2016 edition. However, they are on course to gain qualification for Germany next year.
Albania currently sit top of the Group E standings after six rounds of matches after winning four of their six matches. They currently sit two points ahead of the Czech Republic, and crucially are three clear of Poland having played a game less. Therefore, victory on Friday will secure their spot in Germany. Albania comes into this match after winning each of their last two, and boast the best attacking and defensive records.
Moldova have two games remaining in Group E, but they have landed just two victories from their six matches to this point. However, such is the open nature of the group, they could yet finish second in the standings if they pick up back-to-back wins and results go in their favour.
They at least come into this match in excellent recent form, as they have gone three without defeat in Group E. Moldova played out a draw in their most recent fixture, which ended a two-game winning sequence. However, positives would have been taken from that tie against Poland away from home.
Albania are unbeaten in six international matches against Moldova. They have won each of the previous three without conceding a goal, which includes a 2-0 success in the reverse of this fixture in June.
It has been a memorable qualification campaign for Albania this year, and they look set to gain a second spot at the EURO finals. We expect them to complete the job this week by landing a fourth straight success against their rivals. That could be achieved in the form of a 2-0 scoreline.
