Marseille kick off their 2023-24 Ligue 1 campaign on Saturday, as they host Reims. The French side will be looking to improve on last season’s result, as they finished third in the standings.
The action in France’s Ligue 1 kicks off this weekend for the 2023-24 campaign. Marseille will be among the teams looking to get involved in a title challenge after seeing what has happened at PSG during the summer. However, they will need to find the consistency that they struggled with over the closing months of the previous campaign. The French side dropped out of the final two in the final two months of the season after losing four of their last five matches.
However, there will be a fresh feel to the team ahead of the start of the new season. Geoffrey Kondogbia and Renan Lodi have both joined the team from Atletico Madrid, while Pierre Emerick-Aubameyang will be tasked with scoring the goals to fire Marseille nearer to the top of the standings.
Reims enjoyed a steady campaign in France last term, as they were guided toward the middle of the standings by Will Still. They were excellent in the middle of the campaign, as they went 19 matches without defeat. However, they weren’t able to get any closer to the European spot after losing six of their final eight matches.
The big miss for the team this season will be Folarin Balogun, who scored 21 goals in Ligue 1 last term. The striker returned to Arsenal after his loan spell, and replacing his quality in the final third will be a huge concern. Reims have added Teddy Teuma and Reda Khadra this summer, but they will likely need to bring in an extra striker to ensure that they don’t get dragged into a battle at the bottom of the standings.
Marseille has gone six matches without defeat in Ligue 1 against Reims. They also come into this match after winning each of their last three against their rivals. That includes a 2-1 win in the previous encounter between the sides in March.
Reims look set to struggle this term after failing to replace last season’s top scorer. Marseille will have high hopes this campaign, and they look challenging to oppose in their first match of the 2023-24 season in front of their home fans.
