Marcus Rashford arrived at Barcelona as a Manchester United outcast, having been sidelined by coach Ruben Amorim and his predecessors. Months later, Rashford boasts an impressive goal-to-assist ratio, regularly involved in the team's offensive dynamics following Raphinha's injury absence. However, his success remains limited as he is lacking in his out-of-possession game. How should we rank a heavily flawed but successful footballer?

A Proven Certainty in Front of Goal

Goals and assists are not an issue for Marcus Rashford. In twelve La Liga games, the Englishman has provided six assists and scored two goals, while scoring in each of his four Champions League appearances. Rashford assisted twice against Celta Vigo and scored Barcelona's only goal against Sevilla. There is no doubt that he has been essential for the Catalans in front of goal. Still, criticism persists. If Rashford is to be judged as a Raphinha replacement, he could never succeed. More than a goalscorer or playmaker, the Brazilian was adored in Catalonia for his defensive involvement.  In this regard, Raphinha is irreplaceable. Flick needs his players, especially forwards, to launch an intense first pressing line. This is particularly important considering that Robert Lewandowski and Lamine Yamal are relatively inactive defensively. [banner][/banner]

A Different Profile From Raphinha

Rashford cannot provide that defensive intensity, nor can he dribble like Lamine Yamal. Yet he has linked up well with Ferrán Torres and Lamine Yamal in the penalty box, where he acts as an inside forward. The Englishman continues to find crucial goals, even if he is no Robert Lewandowski. The Barcelona fanbase has already accepted him as an essential player. In possession, he ranks among the team's best attacking players. However, this may not be enough to survive in Catalonia.

Marcus Rashford tops all Barcelona players for goal contributions in all competitions this season:

Rashford needs to defend more. For now, he remains passive without the ball, watching his teammates struggle. The player is aware of the issue, which he is working to fix. At Manchester United, he was granted star status, which meant his teammates would press for him. As a result, he does not instinctively run for the ball, which Flick's staff expects him to do.  This has become evident in recent weeks, as he was seen putting in more defensive shifts against Celta Vigo. Still, he is far from Raphinha's level, which allowed the team to function both offensively and defensively. It is impossible not to mention Rashford's goal record. Football should never be viewed solely through a stat sheet lens, but he has registered one goal or assist in almost every game he has played.

Rashford stepped up when most needed, as Lewandowski, Torres, and eventually even Lamine Yamal were injured. He has linked up well with almost all of his teammates, justifying his presence on the field despite his shortcomings. Rashford is no perfect player, but one who is willing to learn and dedicated to improving his performances.

An Inconsistent and Passive Player

Although Rashford remains one of the most productive players, his inconsistency has been a curse.  He has been invisible in important games, such as the 3-3 Champions League draw against Brugge and the 2-1 victory against Girona. He also struggled initially, as he was tasked with dribbling past defenders tracking him, something he has never excelled at.  The player has struggled to adapt to the greater flexibility required of him. If not for his goals, he might have been dropped from the starting line-up more than once.

What Happens When Raphinha Returns?

Although an established starter in Flick's line-up until now, one major question surrounds Marcus Rashford's future. What will happen when Raphinha returns to the pitch in the coming weeks?  The Brazilian's status alongside Lamine Yamal makes him one of the undisputed starters. There aren't many such players, but Raphinha is among them. Rashford's few spells as a striker have not impressed, as he cannot play as a target man, a role that requires more physical presence and less movement.

Rashford likes to play with the ball, which requires freedom. Fermín López has also been impressive this season, meaning that rumors of shifting Raphinha to a central playmaker role are unlikely to materialize.  Dropping a player like Rashford, who has contributed so much during this difficult season, could cause trouble in the dressing room. Tensions are already high due to injuries and unconvincing results. The only option is to rotate them, which also seems unlikely given they require different strategies to optimize their respective profiles.

A Problematic Transfer Fee

For now, few club sources suggest that Rashford has gathered enough support to stay beyond his loan. His parent club, Manchester United, will look for a higher price than Barcelona can afford.  The Catalans would only be willing to pay €30 million, which may not be enough to satisfy the Manchester club. Yet there is hope for Rashford, given that his former teammate Antony faced a similar situation with Real Betis. In the end, a deal was reached although it was only completed in the final minutes of the summer transfer window.

Rashford is on the right path, but he must readapt once Raphinha returns. He will no longer be an undisputed starter, and his flexibility will determine whether he ends up as a failed transfer despite a good start, or as a success story who overcomes his limitations.
