Manchester United begin their 2023-24 campaign on Monday evening, as they welcome Wolves to Old Trafford. There will be pressure on Erik ten Hag to take the team forward after an impressive first season in control at the Theatre of Dreams.
It has been all change at Manchester United this summer, with the Red Devils allowing David de Gea to leave the club on a free transfer. It is the first time since the 1992-93 season that the club come into the new campaign without a Premier League winner in their squad, but ten Hag has certainly molded this new-look side around his beliefs.
Andre Onana could be one of the most important signings that the club have made this summer, as his ability to play out from the back will transform how the team plays. Meanwhile, big-name arrivals such as Mason Mount and Rasmus Holjund make United more mobile at the top end of the field. However, the Red Devils will be looking for a quicker start than they made last term, as they were beaten in their opening match by Brighton at Old Trafford to kick off the 2022-23 season.
Things are looking fairly bleak at Wolverhampton Wanderers coming into the new season. Julen Lopetegui walked away from the club just three days before the start of the new campaign, and he was quickly replaced by former Bournemouth boss Gary O’Neil. However, the club have been hamstrung by FFP issues throughout the summer, which has seen them part ways with first-team stars such as Ruben Neves, Nathan Collins, Raul Jimenez, and Adama Traore.
Wolves have been able to sign a number of stars, with the pick of those being the addition of Boubacar Traore and the return of Matt Doherty. However, it’s a big ask to see where the goals are going to come from in this team.
United have won each of their last two matches against Wolves without conceding. That includes a 2-0 win over their rivals in May. The Red Devils have won four of the previous five, but Wolves did land a rare win at Old Trafford in January 2022.
Wolves have huge issues to address, and this is far from an ideal opening fixture. We expect United to make an early statement of intent in the Premier League on Monday, and we could see them landing a 3-0 win at Old Trafford.
