Manchester United already have one foot in the EFL Cup final this season, as they picked up a convincing 3-0 win at the City Ground last week. However, the Red Devils will need to be professional in their second leg against Nottingham Forest on Wednesday if they are to return to Wembley for the first time since their FA Cup final defeat against Chelsea in 2018.
EFL Cup Preview
There is little doubt that Manchester United have improved under the reign of Erik ten Hag this term, but silverware will be all that matters when fans of the club look back at this season at its conclusion. It has been a long time since the Red Devils last won a trophy, with their EFL Cup success in 2017 being their last major domestic honour.
However, United look a prominent player in both domestic cup competitions this term, and have eased through to the semi-finals of the EFL Cup with relative ease. The Red Devils were in no mood to make much of a contest out of this semi-final, as they effectively took the game away from Nottingham Forest in the first leg last week. Marcus Rashford netted the opener after six minutes, before Wout Weghorst scored his first goal for United before the break. Gloss was put on the win by Bruno Fernandes in the final stages.
Forest will only be too aware of the size of the task that awaits them at Old Trafford on Wednesday evening, as they will need a 3-0 win to set up extra time. Any hope of that looks relatively slim, as they have already been beaten 3-0 by United at the Theatre of Dreams since play resumed after the World Cup.
Steve Cooper would have been disappointed with his side’s performance in the first leg, as they made things far too easy for the Red Devils. However, confidence could be taken by the team by an impressive showing in the second leg this week.
Manchester United vs Nottingham Forest Head to Head
The Red Devils boast a dominant record in the previous meetings between the sides, as they have won the last eight meetings between the sides. Meanwhile, you have to go back to 1994 for Nottingham Forest’s last win at Old Trafford.
Manchester United vs Nottingham Forest Prediction
It doesn’t look up for debate that Manchester United will be heading to Wembley this season for the EFL Cup final. We could see them securing their spot in the final with a comfortable 3-0 win over Forest at the Theatre of Dreams.
