It’s the first cup final of the English football season as Manchester City face Tottenham Hotspur at Wembley Stadium, London. This delayed final will attract widespread attention, and it won’t just be because of the football on show. Supporters will be permitted to attend Sunday’s final as fans begin to creep back into stadiums in the UK ahead of this summer’s Euro 2020 championships.
Many football fans have been locked out of arenas for more than a year now, so there will be real excitement in the air for this final. The stands won’t be packed with supporters like previous League Cup finals at Wembley, however. This is very much an event to test the water with social distancing and mass testing in place. However, it is a step in the right direction and one welcomed by football fans.
Manchester City is speeding towards Premier League glory and looks sure to win back the title they lost to Liverpool back in the summer. They are top of the Premier League table and enjoy a comfortable cushion over Manchester United and the chasing pack. Pep Guardiola’s men are also in the Champions League semi-finals as well as the final of this competition. The treble remains a possibility.
City secured their spot in the final with an impressive win over Manchester United in the semi-final back in January. They progressed at the expense of their city rivals thanks to Stones and Fernandinho, with both coming in the second half. Confidence is high in the squad, and they will be eager to kick start their trophy haul with victory in this match.
Tottenham is out of the Champions League and has no chance of winning the Premier League. This is their main hope of clinching silverware, and players will be eager to ensure the campaign doesn’t end without a trophy. The Londoners are battling for a top-four finish in the Premier League but face an uphill struggle if they are to deny the likes of Chelsea and West Ham by sneaking into fourth.
Spurs also won their semi-final match with a 2-0 final score back in January. They eased past Championship club Brentford with the goals coming from Sissoko and Son Heung-Min. It was a comfortable outing for the London club, but they know they face a much bigger challenge in clearing the last hurdle and getting their hands on the EFL Cup.
Man City are high on confidence at present and have three trophies to fight for. The league title already looks to be in the bag, allowing them to focus on the Champions League. Winning the League Cup would begin a successful finish to the season, proving Man City are back in command of English football.
Tottenham have underperformed this season, and fans will be happy they’ve not been there to see Jose’s side stumble through the campaign. They were beaten at home by Man Utd recently and followed that with a 2-2 draw away to Everton.
Man City are 1.165 at 22bet to win the match with Tottenham 2.496 and the draw 1.245.
