Manchester City will continue their quest for a fourth straight Premier League title when they return to league action on Wednesday evening. Burnley will be the visitors to the Etihad, but they will be massive outsiders in the betting to claim maximum points.
The race for the Premier League title will take centre stage between now and the end of May, with Man City looking menacing in their pursuit of a historic triumph. The reigning champions have landed victories in their last three matches in the competition, but they are still five points behind Liverpool at this stage of the season.
Burnley will have the difficult challenge of trying to stop City in their tracks this week, as the Clarets look for a much-needed victory in their battle to avoid the drop. Vincent Kompany’s side have lost two of their last three matches, and they have picked up maximum points on just one occasion from their previous five outings.
City’s record against newly promoted sides deserves the ultimate respect this week, as the reigning champions have won 15 of their last 16. Their only defeat was suffered against Leeds in April 2021. That loss was also their only defeat in their previous 49 at home against newly promoted sides in the Premier League.
City have also been dominant in matches played on a Wednesday, with the club currently boasting a 29-match unbeaten run since a 1-0 defeat against Tottenham in May 2010. They also come into this showdown after winning the last 18. However, Burnley have won more matches away from home against reigning champions than any other side since the start of the 2017-18 season.
City’s record in this fixture looks incredibly challenging to overlook this week, as they have won 16 of their last 17 fixtures against Burnley. That includes victories in each of the last 12 by an aggregate scoreline of 43-1. Burnley are also winless in their last 16 top-flight matches against City since a 5-2 win in March 1963.
This should be one of the most straightforward matches to predict in the Premier League this week, as City look almost impossible to bet against. Their dominant recent run of form, and their excellent record against the Clarets means that it could be worthwhile to side with the hosts covering the (-2) handicap.
