Man City v Chelsea Prediction: Premier League Match on 15.01.2022

Following a weekend of cup football with the semi-finals of the EFL Cup taking centre stage, we return to league action. It’s round 22 of the Premier League campaign and followers have some fascinating matches to look forward to.

Game of the day pairs top of the league against their main rivals in second as Manchester City host Chelsea at the Etihad Stadium. You can follow that match live on television from 12:30 GMT, bringing the curtain up on what is sure to be another thrilling round of fixtures.

Manchester City holds the home advantage and are also top of the league. The current champions were pre-season favourites with most respected pundits to successfully defend their trophy and with the Cityzens top of the league and well clear of the chasing pack, that prediction is looking a smart one. If Man City can win at home against the team that is currently second in the league it would move them a step closer to lifting the title.

This will be the second match of the season involving the Cityzens and Blues after they clashed at Stamford Bridge back in September.

It was Pep Guardiola’s men that came out on top that day, grabbing all three points thanks to a single goal scored by Gabriel Jesus on 53 minutes. Can Chelsea use this match to get their revenge and keep the title race alive or will the locals hammer another nail into the coffin of this season?

City enjoy a winning run

Manchester City are going great guns and sit proudly atop the division, favourites to successfully defend the title they won back from Liverpool last season. The Cityzens are hot favourites with most pundits to achieve just that and they have been since before round one of the campaign but the team deserve credit for the way they have gone about their business.

Unaffected by the pressure of challenging for back to back titles following last season’s disappointing defeat to Chelsea in the Champions League final, the club hit the ground running and haven’t looked back. They are playing with confidence and look every inch a champion in-waiting.

Following a break in play for their FA Cup and EFL Cup games, Manchester City are back in Premier League action and ready to pick up where they left off. The home team are in pole position with their stats showing 17 wins against two draws and a pair of defeats, scoring 53 goals while conceding 13.

The home team has 53 points on the board already and that is 10 more than Chelsea in second place. A victory here wouldn’t end the title race, of course, but it would prove to be another huge result for the leaders.

The locals have won each of their last five outings at this level, racking up a maximum of 15 points. They were last seen in league action beating Arsenal 2-1 away from home but had to fight back from a goal down to win the points that day.

The victors found themselves behind in the contest early before equalising and taking advantage of the Gunners having a man sent off. It was a test of character for the champions but one they passed with flying colours.

A must win match for Chelsea

Chelsea also enjoy a recent unbeaten record and haven’t lost any of their last five games but a failure to kill teams off from a winning position has hampered their progress and could derail their title challenge.

The Blues are second in the table but have claimed just seven of the last 15 points that have been available to them, winning one and drawing the other four. As a result, Chelsea are now 10 points behind the league leaders and Saturday’s opponents Manchester City. That makes this a must-win match for the visitors.

They arrive in Manchester having drawn each of their last two league starts and a run of draws is fast becoming a concern for the team. The Londoners beat Aston Villa 3-1 away from home to record their last win in the league but have since ended 1-1 at home with Brighton and 2-2 at Stamford Bridge when hosting old rivals Liverpool.

The Seagulls scored an equaliser on 93 minutes to snatch a point late last month before Chelsea were forced to fight back from 2-0 down at home to Liverpool, snatching a 2-2 draw. They secured a share that day thanks to goals from Kovacic and Pulisic scored just a few minutes apart.

Since that draw with Liverpool, we have seen Chelsea in cup action. They beat Tottenham 2-0 at home in the semi-final of the EFL Cup before hammering Chesterfield 5-1 in London on FA Cup action a week ago.

Many first team regulars were given the day off for that emphatic FA Cup win, meaning the squad will be rested, fit and focussed on this trip. If Chelsea can secure an away win it would help make the title race more exciting.

Man City v Chelsea prediction

The league title is now Manchester City’s to lose and they know if they continue their great form, the Cityzens will pass the finish line and defend the trophy with plenty of time to spare.

The pressure is not on the leaders from here, but on the shoulders of Chelsea and Liverpool who are seen as the only other contenders to the crown. A home win over the team in second place would go some way to helping wrap up the prize and everyone connected to Man City is well aware of that fact.

Chelsea travel to the Etihad Stadium knowing they need to win this match and that isn’t a great position to be in. Few teams welcome a visit to the Etihad and no side in Europe fancies having to go there and defeat their hosts.

Chelsea are good enough to challenge for the win but anything other than three points would hand the advantage to their opponents.
