Villarreal will have a huge fixture in Spain this weekend, as they bid to end a three-game losing run in La Liga. Mallorca will be the hosts for the fixture, as they bid to record a third win in five games and consolidate their place in the top half of the standings.
It has been a disappointing run of form for Villarreal in La Liga over recent weeks, as their chances of finishing in the Champions League spots has been impacted after losing each of their previous three. That is also mirrored by the fact that they have picked up just a single win from their previous five matches. That form has enabled the teams in the top four to open up a seven-point advantage over one of their key rivals.
However, positives would have been taken from Villarreal’s previous outing in La Liga, as they battled well against Barcelona. But, the additional talent that the league leaders boast in the final third enabled them to pick up maximum points on the road. This looks a more winnable game for them, so the pressure will be on.
Mallorca remain in the middle of the standings, but they will be keen to find some more consistency in their performances. The Spanish side sit tenth in the standings, but they have won twice and lost three in their previous five games. That run of form means that they still only sit eight points above the drop zone.
Mallorca wasn’t able to kick on after their win against Real Madrid, as they were extremely disappointing against Sevilla last weekend. They didn’t manage a single shot in 90 minutes in that fixture, and they only had 35% of the ball against a resurgent Sevilla side.
Mallorca picked up a victory in the previous meeting between the sides this season, as they won 2-0 away from home. Meanwhile, they are unbeaten in their previous five home matches against Villarreal, winning three times over that period. Last season’s meeting between the sides in Mallorca ended in a 0-0 draw.
Villarreal will desperately need to get back to winning ways to aid their chances of finishing in a Champions League spot this season. However, we could once again see them struggle this weekend. The preference is for the hosts to respond after their no-show against Sevilla last time out.
