Mallorca will be looking to end a difficult run of form in La Liga this weekend when they host Real Sociedad. The hosts have lost their last two, while Sociedad will also be desperate for victory after going three without success in the Spanish top-flight.
Real Sociedad appeared to be cruising toward a place in the Champions League spots in La Liga just a few weeks ago. However, their chances of finishing in the top four are now questionable, as they sit just three points ahead of Real Betis in the La Liga standings. Sociedad has gone three without a win in the league, while they have picked up just a single victory from their last five matches. However, a return to winning ways could lift them back up to third this weekend.
Sociedad was held to a second draw in three matches in their previous match, as they couldn’t find a way through against an organised Cadiz. Neither side could find a breakthrough, with the points shared following a 0-0 draw. Sociedad managed just three shots on target despite dominating the possession.
Mallorca will also be keen to get back on track in the league, as they will not want to get dragged into the relegation scrap at the bottom half of the standings. They come into this fixture having lost back-to-back games, while they have also lost three of their previous four matches in the league. However, a return to winning ways could lift them up to eighth.
But, they will need to put their recent performance behind them, as Mallorca was extremely disappointing when losing 1-0 to Elche over the weekend. Mallorca managed just three shots on target in that game, and they were made to pay for a defensive lapse when Elche stole the points in the 88th minute.
Sociedad’s league record against Mallorca is exceptionally strong, as they have picked up wins against Mallorca in each of the previous six meetings. They have kept four consecutive clean sheets, including in the meeting earlier this season when winning 1-0.
Neither side comes into this fixture with good form under their belt, meaning that the first goal is likely to be key. However, we expect Sociedad to get back on track this weekend to enhance their chances of a top-four finish.
