There will be semi-final action in the Copa del Rey on Wednesday, as Real Sociedad look to win a second domestic honour in four seasons. However, they will be on the road for their first leg showdown against Mallorca this week, with the hosts chasing a shock win to turn their fortunes around.
It hasn’t been the best season to this point for either Sociedad or Mallorca, but domestic glory could go a long way to ensuring that the end of the campaign could be a memorable one. Sociedad come into this match after winning once in their last five La Liga matches, but they have also suffered just one defeat over the same period.
Sociedad have won the Copa del Rey on two occasions during their history, with their most recent success coming back in 2019-20. They have already shown some professional displays in the competition this term, winning each of their last four matches in the tournament by a one-goal scoreline. In the previous round, Sociedad secured a dramatic 2-1 win on the road against Real Sociedad.
Mallorca have also endured a miserable campaign to this point, as they are battling at the bottom end of the standings after 23 rounds of matches. Their league form would be a concern at this stage, as they have lost each of their last two. Meanwhile, they have recorded just three victories in La Liga this term.
However, they have already exceeded that number of victories in the Copa del Rey after winning four matches to reach this stage. Mallorca are looking for a second victory in the competition after previously landing success in 2002-03. They have also reached the final on two further occasions, most recently in 1997-98.
Mallorca have a poor record in this fixture, as they are without a victory against Sociedad since landing a 1-0 win in the league in 2012. Sociedad have won eight of the previous ten across all competitions, which includes a 1-0 victory in this Spanish competition last season.
Both of these sides have struggled for consistency in recent weeks, and that could mean that pinpointing the most likely victor could be risky. Therefore, a draw could be a standout selection, as it’s unlikely to be a result that either side would complain about.
