Girona resume their race for the La Liga title this weekend, as they chase a second straight victory. Mallorca will have the home field advantage for this showdown in their hunt to end a two-game winless run in the competition.
The pressure appears to have told at Girona, as they have quickly lost ground in the race for the title after failing to win three of their last four matches. But, they showed their character in their latest match in the competition by claiming a much-needed victory close the gap on Real Madrid at the top of the standings to six points.
A push for the title remains unlikely at this stage of the campaign, but a Champions League finish would have been outside of their wildest dreams at the beginning of the season. Girona still have a healthy advantage in their race to finish in the top four, as they hold a ten-point advantage over fifth-place Athletic Bilbao. But, they will need to maintain their high performance levels to end the season in second spot.
Mallorca come into this round of matches sitting 16th in the standings after winning just four of their 26 matches this season. The Spanish side are just six points outside of the relegation places, and they will need to be more productive in the final third of the field between now and the end of the season after scoring just 23 goals so far this term.
Mallorca have suffered defeats in three of their last five matches in La Liga, with only one win having been recorded over that period. They also come into this weekend after going two without a victory following their draw in the competition with Alaves last weekend.
Mallorca landed a Copa del Rey success against Girona in the previous encounter between these sides this season. However, that win ended a three-game winless sequence against their rivals. Girona have recorded wins in each of the last two league matches between the sides, but they are without an away win in Mallorca since May 2015.
This could be an interesting fixture in the Spanish top flight this weekend, with both sides in the hunt for maximum points. Girona’s poor record on the road against Mallorca means that there could be value in siding with a shock home victory for Mallorca on Sunday.
