A massive showdown at the bottom of the Bundesliga standings will take place on Friday, as Mainz and Union Berlin both look to aid their survival chances. Mainz have been held in each of their last two, but they are still looking for a second victory this term.
There will be a nervy fixture in the Bundesliga this weekend, as Mainz and Union Berlin collide on Friday evening. Mainz will be aware that they come into this match sitting in the relegation playoff spot after winning just once in 17 matches this term. They have played out a league-high eight draws already this term, and a victory on Friday could see them end the round in 15th.
However, their lack of wins this term would be a considerable concern coming into the weekend. The German side have at least been more challenging to beat in recent weeks after playing out three draws in their last five. But, they have scored just 14 goals in their 17 matches.
Union Berlin are looking stronger at this stage, as they have eased their worries surrounding a shock relegation after finishing in a Champions League spot last term. The capital club have won four of their 16 matches this season, and they have bounced back into form in recent weeks after landing two victories in their last four fixtures.
Union are now unbeaten in their last two matches after returning following the winter break by landing a draw in their previous match. That draw was picked up on the road against Freiburg, as Union bossed proceedings without making the breakthrough in the final third.
Union has an excellent record in this fixture, as they have won each of their last two against Mainz and four of the last five. Each of their last two victories against their rivals have been recorded in Berlin, which includes a 4-1 success in August.
This is a huge game in the contexts of both teams this weekend. However, it could be hard to overlook Union’s excellent record in the fixture, as they go in search of a third straight success against Mainz in the Bundesliga.
