Huge derby action takes place on the second weekend of matches in the Bundesliga this weekend, as Eintracht Frankfurt look to build on their opening day win. Mainz will be looking to bounce back after suffering defeat on the road.
It was an impressive opening to the new season for Eintracht Frankfurt, as they looked solid at both ends of the field to land a win in their first match of the campaign. However, their big challenge will now be to build on the steps taken on matchday one at their home of their local rivals.
Not for the first time, Randal Kolo Muani was the match-winner for Frankfurt in their opening match of the season, as the Frenchman scored the only goal of the game with five minutes to go before the break. Frankfurt defended excellently in the second period, as they allowed newly-promoted Darmstadt just two shots on target. But, they will be aware that they will need to raise their performance level further if they are to claim maximum points at Mainz on Sunday.
Mainz suffered a humbling loss in their first match of the new season, as they went down to a 4-1 defeat against Union Berlin. The German side were in the game for long period, and missed crucial penalties at key stages to really threaten last season’s dark horses.
Few could have argued against Mainz deserving a point against Union, especially as they played on the front-foot for an extended period after pulling a goal back through Anthony Caci. However, defensive mistakes were evident throughout their performance, and they will need to be addressed before the visit of their local rivals this weekend.
Frankfurt have a fine recent league record in this fixture, as they have gone six without defeat against Mainz. Over that period, they have recorded three wins, which includes a 3-0 win in the most recent encounter in May 2023. Mainz have failed to win in their previous three home matches against Frankfurt.
Frankfurt made a strong start to the new season last weekend, but the fact that they have a European qualifier in between this fixture would be a concern. Therefore, a chance is taken on Mainz to land maximum points in front of their home fans to bounce back after defeat against Union.
