Tottenham Hotspur beat Coventry City 3-1 at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in the Premier League on Monday 19 October 2026, according to The Guardian.

Spurs secured their first Premier League win of the season in their seventh game, after being winless in their opening six (3D, 3L). Dejan Kulusevski's late appearance was his first in 526 days, ending an absence that began at the end of the 2024-25 season.

How the Goals Came

James Maddison, making his first competitive start since May 2025, opened the scoring against his former club in the 14th minute from a Mohammed Kudus pass. It was his first goal for a club in 17 months.

Jack Rudoni equalised for Coventry City in the 49th minute, set up by Brandon Thomas-Asante. Omar Marmoush restored Tottenham Hotspur's lead in the 58th minute with his first goal for the club, set up by Andy Robertson. Ben Davies added a third in the 96th minute, set up by Dominic Solanke.

Dominic Solanke had a goal ruled out for offside in the 18th minute after tapping in Andy Robertson's cross. Coventry protested that Marmoush had fouled Milan van Ewijk in the build-up, but the referee let play continue and VAR did not intervene.

De Zerbi's Back Three Ends the Drought

Roberto De Zerbi changed the shape for Tottenham Hotspur's meeting with Frank Lampard's newly promoted Coventry City, according to the Sky Sports report, moving to a back three with Kudus at right wing-back and Archie Gray alongside Sandro Tonali in midfield.

Spurs dominated the ball but struggled to turn it into a fluent performance. They had 65.4% of the ball and completed 505 passes to Coventry's 225, who went long 62 times to Spurs' 28.

Spurs had 16 shots to Coventry's 12, but only five on target — still five more than the visitors managed. De Zerbi admitted his side lacked intensity on the ball and credited Coventry's low block.

Spurs went into the game winless in five league and cup matches, having drawn with Manchester United, Everton and Nottingham Forest and lost to Aston Villa and Liverpool.

Coventry came into the game having won their last two, including a 4-1 home win against Newcastle United on 12 October 2026, but those followed three straight defeats in league and cup games.

Win Came at a Cost

Andy Robertson, Tosin Adarabioyo and Omar Marmoush were all substituted with injury concerns, but Roberto De Zerbi insisted after the match there was "nothing important" ahead of the trip to Chelsea.

The win lifts Tottenham Hotspur out of the relegation zone to 16th on six points, level with Coventry City and above them on goal difference. Next up, on Saturday 24 October, Spurs travel to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, while Coventry City host Fulham.
