One of the biggest matches in French soccer will take place this Sunday, as Lyon and Marseille collide. Both sides will be looking to get back to winning ways, with pressure on the visitors once again after losing each of their previous two in Ligue 1.
Lyon against Marseille is one of the biggest matches in France, but it has typically seen both sides competing nearer to the top of the standings. That couldn’t be further from the truth for Lyon this term, as they come into this huge showdown in the relegation playoff spot in Ligue 1. After winning three on the bounce, there was hope that the French giants could begin to move up the standings.
However, that positive run has quickly fallen apart after defeats in each of their last two matches in the league. Their most recent defeat was suffered at home against Rennes, with Lyon conceding three goals in the opening 41 minutes. They won’t be afforded the luxury of making a slow start once again this weekend against their fierce rivals.
Marseille will also have questions to answer in the league this weekend, as they have played out draws in their last three matches in the competition. That run of form has hindered their chances of making inroads on the European spots, and they remain three points behind fifth-place Lille.
However, they have been much more difficult to beat across that period, which would be a huge plus given how they started the season. Marseille’s most recent draw in the league was played out against AS Monaco last Sunday. They likely should have claimed maximum points in that match, especially considering that they were up against ten men for almost 80 minutes.
Marseille has an excellent recent record in this fixture after winning each of their last three against Lyon. But, their win on the road in April 2023 was their first success at Lyon since a 1-0 win in the Coupe de la Ligue in April 2012.
There will be pressure on both of these sides this weekend, as three points could be huge for either in terms of achieving their goals for the season. However, the slight preference is for Marseille to secure victory to maintain their winning sequence against Lyon.
