Luka Modrić is not finished yet. Reports in Italy indicate the Croatia midfielder has agreed to prolong his time at AC Milan by another season, putting to bed speculation that a disappointing World Cup would nudge him towards retirement.
Modrić, who turns 41 in September, joined the San Siro club last summer after a trophy-laden spell at Real Madrid. Many expected a gentle wind-down, but the veteran featured in almost every fixture under Massimiliano Allegri — the coach later dismissed once Milan failed to secure Champions League qualification.
Allegri's successor, Ruben Amorim, was keen to keep Modrić on for another campaign. According to La Gazzetta dello Sport and Tuttosport, the two sides reached an agreement after lengthy negotiations, with the fresh 12-month contract expected to be confirmed shortly. Modrić had been operating on a one-year deal and will now commit to another on similar terms.
The extension follows a bruising end to his international summer, with Croatia knocked out early at the 2026 World Cup — a result that appears to have brought the curtain down on Modrić's national-team career.
His pedigree, though, remains beyond question: a 2018 Ballon d'Or winner, a serial Champions League champion at Real Madrid, and Croatia's most-capped player and long-serving captain. At Milan, that experience and passing range stay valuable assets as Amorim reshapes his squad for the season ahead.
