It has been a pleasing enough start to the new season for Lille, as they have picked up four points from their opening two matches. However, they will be bidding to continue that hot-streak when they visit Lorient on Sunday.
Lille will be among the leading contenders to finish in a European spot this term after ending the previous campaign in the Europa Conference League spot. However, they will need to be winning these types of fixtures if they are to challenge for a Champions League spot in what is likely to be an extremely competitive campaign in France’s top-flight.
Lille finally got off the mark at the second attempt last weekend, as they battled to a 2-0 home win against Nantes. Jonathan David broke the deadlock after 66 minutes, but the hosts were hanging on in the final 12 minutes after a red card for Alexsandro. But, Lille managed to add a second effort in injury time, with Adam Ounas scoring an excellent goal.
Lorient will pose a big challenge for Lille this weekend, as they are also unbeaten in their two league matches this season. After holding PSG to a 0-0 draw on matchday one, they picked up a first home point of the season last Sunday, as they played out a 1-1 draw against Nice.
Their home form could be a key factor for Lorient this season, as they have lost just three of their last 12 domestic home fixtures in 2023. That is an excellent turnaround in form after losing each of their last three at home before the turn of the year.
An interesting trend to consider is the fact that none of the previous 17 matches between these sides in the league have ended in a draw. In fact, the most recent draw between the teams came in September 2011. Lorient have a fine record in home matches against Lille, as they have won five of their last eight.
Lille finally got off the mark for the new season last weekend with a fine win. However, we could see Lorient landing a first win of the campaign this weekend. They boast an excellent home record against Lille, meaning that we could see the visitors’ wait for a 900th Ligue 1 victory continue.
