There will be an all-Premier League clash in the quarterfinals of the EFL Cup on Wednesday, as Liverpool continue their challenge to win a second honour in three seasons. The Reds will have the home field advantage for the visit of West Ham United.
A break in play in the Premier League means that all the attention in midweek in England will be on the EFL Cup. The final eight teams left in the hunt for domestic cup glory will be in action, with all believing that they hold excellent claims of reaching the semi-finals. Liverpool are the current outright favourites to win the tournament this term, and they will have home field advantage in their bid to reach the final four.
The Reds will need an improved effort after being held to a goalless draw in their latest home match by Manchester United, but Jurgen Klopp will have fond memories after winning the competition in 2021-22. Liverpool have easily progressed to this stage of the competition, beating Leicester City in the third round before easing past Bournemouth in the round of 16 last month.
West Ham have been an excellent cup side since David Moyes arrived at the club. There was only further evidence of that last term, as the Hammers landed Europa Conference League success just 12 months after going deep in the Europa League. However, domestic cup success has evaded the Hammers throughout their recent history.
West Ham will likely be boosted by recent performances, which included a 3-0 success over Wolves on Sunday. Meanwhile, the Hammers upset the odds in the previous round of the competition after eliminating Arsenal at the London Stadium.
Liverpool boast a strong record against the Hammers after winning each of the last four. West Ham’s most recent win over the Reds was achieved in November 2021, but they are winless in eight visits to Anfield since a 3-0 win in August 2015.
West Ham will ensure that this is a good test for Liverpool at Anfield on Wednesday, but it is hard to overlook the host’s dominant advantage in the head-to-head meetings. Therefore, we will be taking Liverpool to reach the final four of the EFL Cup.
