The race for the Premier League title continues this weekend when Liverpool return to action following the international break. The Reds will be looking for a return to winning ways after dropping points in their previous league outing, while Brighton have won just once in their last three.
The final ten rounds of matches in the Premier League will determine the 2023-24 champions. Liverpool remain in a solid position to win the top prize, and they could move to the summit before Arsenal take to the field for their showdown against Man City on Sunday. However, the Reds will be looking to get their domestic campaign back on track after losing to Man United in the FA Cup before the international break.
Regardless, Liverpool are level on points with the Gunners at the top of the standings, with just seven goals separating the teams coming into this stage of the season. The Reds played out a 1-1 draw in their last league match against Man City, with Alexis MacAlister scoring the crucial leveller at Anfield against the defending champions. But, they can ill-afford any more dropped points.
Brighton will also still be fighting for points in the final months of the season, as the Seagulls will be looking to achieve a second successive finish in the European positions. They come into this round sitting eighth in the standings, and their inconsistency could hinder their chances of achieving a European berth this term.
Brighton have won just once across their last three matches in the Premier League, and they have suffered two defeats across their last five. However, they were able to get back to winning ways in their previous league match after landing a 1-0 success over Nottingham Forest at the City Ground.
Brighton are unbeaten in their last three league matches against the Reds, and they have won twice in the last four against their rivals across all competitions.
These sides played out a thrilling 2-2 draw in the reverse fixture at the Amex in early October. Brighton have avoided defeat on their last three trips to Anfield, landing a historic 1-0 success in February 2021. This exact fixture last term ended in an entertaining 3-3 draw.
Kaoru Mitoma is expected to be out of action for the Seagulls until late May. However, Joao Pedro and James Milner could both be line for returns at Anfield this weekend.
Darwin Nunez is a doubt for this home fixture against Brighton. The Reds have a lengthy injury list at this stage, with Curtis Jones, Alisson, Trent Alexander-Arnold, and Thiago all unavailable for the foreseeable future.
Liverpool have been back to their dominant best at Anfield this term, winning all but three of their matches in front of their own fans. In fact, the Reds have dropped to just three draws, with eleven matches ending in wins.
Meanwhile, Brighton have struggled on the road, losing on seven occasions. The Seagulls have also scored fewer goals and allowed more in away matches this season. Brighton’s only win on the road since the start of December was achieved against Sheffield United in February.
Brighton’s record in this fixture deserves respect, but the pressure will be on Liverpool this weekend, as they look to move back to the top of the standings. The Reds have been extremely consistent in home matches throughout the campaign, and it is hard to bet against them claiming maximum points this weekend. But, we could see both teams finding the back of the net on at least one occasion.
