We are back at Anfield for the second time in four days, as Liverpool and Arsenal will face off for a place in the quarterfinals of the competition. But, will Jurgen Klopp’s side beat the Gunners for the second time this week?
EFL Cup Preview
It has been a good week so far for Liverpool, as they have already seen the gap between themselves and Manchester City increase. Furthermore, the Reds put in one of the best performances that we have seen from the champions against Arsenal to comfortably take the three points on Monday night. The Gunners had no answer for the dominance that was shown by Liverpool in that Premier League fixture.
However, they did somehow manage to get their noses in front in the first half when Alexandre Lacazette pounced on a mistake by Andrew Robertson. The lead didn’t last long, as Sadio Mane equalised three minutes later, before Robertson atoned for his error six minutes after the Reds pulled themselves level. Diogo Jota came on for his Liverpool debut in the second half, and he scored his first goal for his new club with two minutes of the 90 remaining.
That defeat for the Gunners brought an end to their three-match winning run in all competitions to start the season. Arsenal will be targeting a cup success this season, and the EFL Cup could be their best opportunity of achieving that. Mikel Arteta’s side were excellent in the previous round of the competition as they beat Leicester City 2-0. Eddie Nketiah scored the second goal in that win, which means that he has scored two goals in three games so far this season. It’s likely that the young striker will be given another chance to impress at Anfield, as Pierre Emerick-Aubameyang and Lacazette will both be rested.
Liverpool vs Arsenal Head To Head
Monday’s win for Liverpool means that the Reds are now nine unbeaten against the Gunners at Anfield. The two clubs met in the EFL Cup last season and played out a thrilling 5-5 draw in the fourth round. The Reds eventually got through in the tie as they won 5-4 on penalties.
Liverpool vs Arsenal Prediction
Both teams will make a number of changes for this EFL Cup tie, which means that there will be an open feel about the game. Arsenal will be threatening going forward, but it is hard to bet against Liverpool.
