Lille and Lens are in direct competition for a place in the Europa Conference League this season, while both may still have the goal of finishing in a Europa League place. The hosts are unbeaten in five, and will have home advantage as they look for maximum points to move into sixth.
It has been an excellent second half of the Ligue 1 season for the reigning French champions. Lille’s season looked to have been petering out back in January, but they have transformed their campaign with an excellent run of results. That has given them an excellent chance of finishing in a European place this season, and a win here could move them level on points with fifth-placed Nice.
Lille are unbeaten in their previous five fixtures in Ligue 1, and they have won twice during that run. However, they will need to get back to winning ways this weekend, as they were held to a draw for the second straight game last weekend by Angers. Edon Zhegrova scored 16 minutes from time to save a point for Lille in that fixture.
Lens were in a solid position to qualify for Europe earlier in the campaign, but they come into this fixture down in eighth. However, they could still finish in a European spot this season, as they are just three points behind Monaco, and four behind Nice.
Lens have been able to bounce back into form over recent weeks, as they have picked up two victories from their previous three games. Their second win during that period was recorded last weekend, as easily brushed past Nice with a 3-0 success. Despite losing Massadio Haidara to a red card after 17 minutes, goals from Cheick Doucoure and Amaud Kalimuendo wrapped up the win.
Lens have picked up victories in each of the previous two fixtures between the sides in all competitions. Their latest win came in the Coupe de France. Lille have picked up victories in three of the previous four league matches, which includes the 4-0 success that they recorded in this exact fixture last season.
Lille may have lost their previous two against Lens, but I still expect them to claim the points this weekend. Their recent form has been very strong, and the prize of moving up a place in the Ligue 1 standings will be too good to resists this weekend.
