Scottish champions Celtic travel to France where they will take on Lille in matchday two of UEFA Europa League Group H. The Hoops were well beaten by AC Milan last week and manager Neil Lennon finds himself under increasing pressure. A win over Lille would help win over fans, but that’s easier said than done with the locals showing great form.
A big season is expected from this Lille side and they have lived up to the hype so far, making a strong start in both their French Ligue 1 and Europa League campaigns. The home side picked up three points in game one thanks to a stunning 4-1 win achieved over Sparta Prague on the road last week. They made light work of what had been billed as a tough opener, sending out a message of intent to the rest of the tournament in the process.
Despite that confidence-boosting win, Lille managed only a draw in their Ligue 1 comeback on Sunday, scrapping out a 1-1 draw away to Nice. Dolberg gave Nice the lead on 49 minutes in that match before Yilmaz rescued a point just shy of the hour. Neither side could grumble with a share of the points on the reflection of the game.
Things went from bad to worse for Celtic in what was a miserable week for them. They began a run of three games without victory when losing at home to Rangers in the Old Firm Derby. The Celts went down by a 2-0 score at Parkhead and failed to register a single shot on target. As derby defeats go it was a sore one for the fans to take.
That loss to city rivals Rangers was quickly followed by a 3-1 defeat at home to Milan in this competition. The Italians were fully expected to win the game and had no troubles doing the business. It was then left to Aberdeen to heap on the misery, getting a 3-3 draw against Celtic at Pittodrie on Sunday afternoon after twice taking the lead.
Lille are flying at home and in Europe but there looks to be more to come from this ambitious side. Celtic managed only a draw from three important games and are now feeling the wrath of their support. The players must pull together.
