It has been a decent showing by Luxembourg throughout qualification, but it seems as though they will come up just short in their goal to finish in the top two positions. However, they will bid to end their Group J campaign on a high note when they collide with Liechtenstein on Sunday.
Despite failing to finish in the top two spots, Luxembourg have been one of the brightest stories in EURO qualification throughout 2023. They have exceeded all expectations to land three victories from their eight matches, and they have done extremely well to take their fight for an automatic spot into the final two matches.
However, it appears that they will come up short in that battle, as they still have a five-point gap between themselves and Slovakia coming into the final two rounds of matches. But, huge confidence will be taken from their performances throughout the group stage, as they look to build momentum ahead of their huge playoff tie in the New Year.
Liechtenstein were among the first nations across the groups to exit contention of reaching the EUROs next summer, as they have looked way below the standard required in this high-quality group. The minnows have lost all eight of their qualifying matches coming into the weekend, as they have found the back of the net on just one occasion.
Defensively, there have been huge concerns throughout the campaign, as they have allowed a group-high of 25 goals. They were once again below the standard required in the latest international break, as they suffered a 2-0 loss against Bosnia, before being hammered by a 4-0 scoreline against Iceland.
Liechtenstein actually has a fine record in this fixture, as they have picked up three wins from five meetings against Luxembourg. That includes a run of three victories between 2004 and 2020. However, they were beaten 2-0 by their rivals in the latest meeting between the sides in June.
Liechtenstein have looked way off the pace in this qualifying group, and there isn’t much evidence to suggest that they could upset the odds on Sunday. Therefore, we will be siding with Luxembourg to end their campaign on a high note with a victory on the road.
