The only remaining unbeaten side in Europe will be back in action on Saturday, as Bayer Leverkusen bid to extend their advantage at the top of the Bundesliga standings when they host Borussia Monchengladbach. The visitors have won just once in their last five.
Despite sitting top of the standings heading into the winter break, many were predicting that it was a matter of time before Leverkusen’s advantage at the summit would be wiped away. However, Xabi Alonso’s side have had other ideas since returning to action, as they have extended their lead in the Bundesliga to seven points following a fourth straight win last weekend.
It has been a sensational season to this point for Leverkusen, and their excellent performances have shown no sign of stopping. The German side picked up a 15th win in their 18th match of the season last weekend, as they scored a late winner to secure maximum points on the road against RB Leipzig. Their run of victories has put all the pressure on the defending champions in the race for the title.
Borussia Monchengladbach will be the visitors to BayArena this weekend, as they bid to get their campaign back on track. Gladbach come into the weekend after winning just five of their 18 matches this term, while they have recorded just a single victory over their last five outings in the league.
The German side have suffered three defeats over the same period, meaning that they have already lost eight times in the Bundesliga this season. However, a return to form this weekend could lift Gladbach into the top half of the standings, and within five points of the European positions in the Bundesliga.
Leverkusen’s record in this fixture is excellent, as they have avoided defeat in their last eight matches against their rivals. Leverkusen were comfortable 3-0 winners in the first meeting between the teams this season, meaning that they have won seven of their last eight against Gladbach in the Bundesliga.
It looks incredibly hard to overlook Leverkusen’s dominant run of form, as well as their comfortable advantage in the head-to-head record. Therefore, we will be siding with the league leaders to extend their advantage at the summit by landing maximum points on Saturday.
