The runaway leaders in the Bundesliga continue their quest for a first top-flight title in Germany on Friday, as Bayer Leverkusen could move eleven points clear of Bayern Munich with a victory over Mainz in front of their home fans.
A stunning season for Bayer Leverkusen shows no sign of stopping, as Xabi Alonso’s side moved eight points clear at the top of the standings with a third straight victory last weekend. Bayern Munich dropped points on the following day to give Leverkusen a widening advantage at the summit, and that lead could stretch to eleven points if they are able to record maximum points on Friday.
Leverkusen come into the round after winning each of their last three matches, and they are still yet to lose in any competitive fixture this term. The German side have won 18 of their 22 matches in the league, dropping to just four draws. They were made to work hard in their previous match, with Jeremie Frimpong and Amine Adli scoring the goals in a 2-1 away success against Heidenheim.
Mainz will be the latest side to test their luck against the unbeaten league leaders in Germany, and there will be pressure on the visitors. The away team comes into this match sitting second bottom in the standings, and they are currently seven points adrift of safety after 22 rounds of matches.
Mainz have picked up just two victories from 22 matches this term, but they do come into this clash at BayArena after landing a rare success in their latest outing. Their most recent win was picked up at home against Augsburg, with the important winning goal being netted by Sepp van den Berg with just two minutes remaining on the clock before the half time break.
Leverkusen landed a 3-0 win in the reverse clash between the sides this term. That win was their third in their last five against Mainz. However, Mainz were shock 3-2 winners in this exact fixture last term. But, that was their first away win against Leverkusen since February 2017.
It is incredibly challenging to overlook Leverkusen maintaining their unbeaten record in the Bundesliga this week. We expect the home side to cruise to victory at BayArena, and a win could be achieved by at least a three-goal margin.
