There will be a fascinating clash at the top of the Bundesliga standings on Sunday, as Bayer Leverkusen bid to continue their stunning start to the new season when they welcome Borussia Dortmund to BayArena.
The next big challenge awaiting Bayer Leverkusen’s title challenge comes on Sunday, as the league leaders welcome Borussia Dortmund to BayArena. Leverkusen have started the new season in excellent style, as they have won eleven of their opening 12 matches. No side in the German top flight has picked up as many wins as Xabi Alonso’s side.
Leverkusen come into the weekend with a two-point advantage over Bayern Munich, and they could stretch that advantage to five points should results go their way this weekend. Alonso’s side is in excellent form, as they have won each of their previous five matches in the Bundesliga. They were excellent once again last weekend, as they picked up a straightforward 3-0 win on the road against Werder Bremen. Jeremie Frimpong and Alex Grimaldo both found the net in that success away from home.
Borussia Dortmund will also have questions to answer this weekend, as they have dropped points in three of their previous four matches. That run of form has seen last season’s runners-up drop to fourth in the standings, and a defeat on Sunday could see them drop out of the Champions League places.
However, Dortmund put a tricky period before the international break behind them on their return to action, as they were excellent in front of their home fans to record a 4-2 success against Borussia Monchengladbach. Dortmund started that game slowly, but they recovered to score four times, with the final effort being netted by Donyell Malen in second half injury time.
Dortmund have dominated the meetings between these sides in recent seasons, as they have won four of the last five. That includes victories in each of their previous two visits to BayArena. Their most recent win was a 2-0 success in January.
BayArena has been a happy hunting ground for Dortmund in recent seasons, and that could be a damning trend this weekend. However, we could see a draw being the most likely outcome between these two sides in the Bundesliga.
