The Europa League campaign will get underway for Leicester City this week, as they look to get their season back on track with a win against Zorya. But, can the unfancied Ukrainian side cause a shock at the King Power Stadium?
There will still be disappointment around Leicester’s camp that they are involved in the Europa League this season, as it looked throughout the season that they would be able to achieve a Champions League finish. However, defeat to Manchester United on the final day of the 2019-20 season meant that the Red Devils leapfrogged above the Foxes at the last minute.
Home form has continued to be a problem for the Foxes this season, as they have now lost their last two at the King Power Stadium. The first of those was a surprising 3-0 defeat against West Ham United, which saw Leicester outplayed. That defeat was followed up with another loss last time out at the King Power against local rivals Aston Villa. The match seemed to be heading towards a 0-0 draw, before Ross Barkley was given too much space and allowed to shoot. Barkley tucked it into the net, and Leicester will be hoping to end their poor run of form at home this week.
Zorya haven’t been in good form themselves over the past couple of weeks, as they haven’t won in three league matches. They have drawn their last three games, as they have been held by Dynamo Kiev, Inhulets and Kolos. The latter of those results was their most recent, as Zorya were held to a 1-1 draw. Vladyslav Kocherhin scored the opening goal in that game for Zorya, but they went on to concede a last minute equaliser which leaves them in ninth place in the Ukrainian Premier League.
There are a number of injury concerns for Leicester City, as Jamie Vardy, Wilfred Ndidi and Ricardo Pereira will be missing. Caglar Soyuncu and Daniel Amartey will also be unavailable. Zorya will have a fully fit squad for the trip to the East Midlands.
The Foxes haven’t been in the best form to start this new Premier League season, but they should still have enough quality to see off their Ukrainian opponents this week. Zorya’s form would also indicate that Leicester should be able to have joy in the final third of the pitch.
