Fiorentina remains one of the clear favourites for Europa Conference League glory this season. They will continue their hunt for a major piece of silverware on Thursday, as they travel to Poland for their first leg showdown against Lech Poznan.
Fiorentina certainly appears to be one of the teams that is growing into the Europa Conference League this season. They are already among the favoured sides to potentially win the competition, and they have done little to hinder their chances since the knockout rounds got underway. Fiorentina finished second in their group, but they eased through to the round of 16 after landing a huge 7-2 aggregate win over Braga.
Their away for has been excellent throughout the competition, as they scored four times away from home in Portugal. That trend continued in the previous round, as they registered an excellent 5-1 success on aggregate against Sivasspor. Their big win was recorded on the road once again, as they landed a huge 4-1 away win in the second leg.
Lech Poznan kicked off the European season in the Champions League, but they were eliminated in the first qualifying round by Qarabag. However, they managed to book their spot in the Europa Conference League after recording victories against Dinamo Batumi and F91 Dudelange.
In the group stage, they were competitive, but they settled for second in the standings after finishing four points off Villarreal. However, they showed that they could be a threat in the knockout rounds of the competition in the round of 16, as they recorded a handsome 5-0 aggregate success over Djurgarden. The latter of their wins was a fine 3-0 success on the road.
This will be the first clash between the sides since 2005. On that occasion, Fiorentina picked up a 2-0 away win against Poznan. However, the return match in Italy ended in a 2-1 success for the Polish side. In total, across the two previous showdowns, there has been an average of 2.5 goals per game.
This should be a high-quality showdown between the two sides on Thursday. However, we have been impressed in the manner in which Fiorentina has grown into the competition. For that reason, we expect the Italian side to pick up a 2-0 away win to edge closer to a spot in the semi-finals this season.
