A heavyweight clash is set for Serie A this weekend, as Napoli bid to get their league campaign back on track when they travel to Rome. Lazio should be in good confidence ahead of this showdown after winning their last four, and a fifth straight victory could move them into the Champions League spots.
Last season’s top two in Serie A will collide this weekend, with Napoli looking to breathe new life into their campaign and reignite their fight to finish in a Champions League spot. The Italian giants were winners in their previous league fixture, but that ended a three-game sequence with a victory.
Napoli have spent the last week or so in Saudi Arabia competing in the Super Cup, but that ultimately ended in disappointment following a 1-0 loss against Inter Milan. But, they were welcome winners in their last league match against Salernitana. Amir Rrahmani netted the winning goal in that match in the 96th minute. Still, the reigning champions remain ninth in the standings, and they are three points off the Champions League spots, and a staggering 21 off the top spot.
Things are looking slightly more brighter for Lazio at this stage, as last season’s runners-up are currently sitting sixth in the standings. They have won half of their 20 matches this term, and come into the weekend after winning four on the bounce. A victory this weekend could lift them up to fourth, but they could also end the round as low as ninth.
Lazio were very professional in their most recent league match, as they picked up a 1-0 success. Felipe Anderson was the match-winner in that fixture, as the Brazilian broke the deadlock with just over half an hour remaining.
The hosts have won each of their last two against Napoli, which includes a 2-1 success in the reverse clash this term. That is a very welcome return to form against the side from Naples after losing four on the bounce between 2021 and 2022.
Both of these sides will be making their return to league action this weekend after competing in the Italian Super Cup, and a victory for either could be significant. However, the slight preference is for Lazio to claim a third straight success against Napoli, which would also be their first home win against their rivals since December 2020.
