Lazio made a disappointing start to the 2023-24 season, as they were beaten on the opening day. However, they will be looking to get back on track this weekend when they welcome Genoa to the Stadio Olimpico.
There was huge excitement surrounding Lazio ahead of the opening day of the season, as many questioned whether they could be set to go one better this term after finishing second in the league standings last term. However, they will certainly need to play better than they did in their opening match if they are to threaten a title challenge this season.
Lazio appeared to be cruising toward maximum points after going ahead from Ciro Immobile inside the opening half an hour. But, they were made to pay after switching off defensively in the final ten minutes of the match, as Lecce netted twice in the final seven minutes to score a famous home win over their rivals. However, Lazio will be confident this weekend, as they are unbeaten in their last 14 Serie A matches against newly promoted sides.
Genoa were brought back down to earth following their promotion to the Italian top-flight last season on matchday one. They were outclassed in front of their home fans, and were eventually beaten by a 4-1 margin by Fiorentina. Genoa managed just two shots on target in that defeat, and a huge performance will be needed this weekend to get back on track.
However, they are historically a side that have bounced back from a matchday one defeat, as they have only lost each of their opening two matches to start a Serie A season on two occasions in the previous 60 seasons. However, the most recent of those did come in 2021-22.
Lazio have a fine record in this fixture, as they have avoided defeat in 12 of the previous 14 matches. Over that run, they have landed nine victories, which includes victories in each of the last three. However, Lazio have never won four on the bounce against Genoa.
Genoa were very underwhelming in their first match back in Serie A last weekend, and we expect them to struggle this term. Therefore, we will be siding with Lazio landing a first win of the new season this weekend.
