Lazio’s place in next season’s Champions League has already been assured, while Cremonese’s heavy defeat last week confirmed their return to Serie B. Therefore, both sides this weekend will be playing for nothing more than pride.
It has been an excellent season from a Lazio perspective, as they have confirmed their return to the Champions League after an impressive campaign. They remain second in the standings, but they could take a step toward securing second in the standings this weekend with a home victory against Cremonese. They come into the game in patchy form, as they have won just twice over their previous four outings.
Meanwhile, they have landed just a single victory over their previous three matches. However, that victory was recorded in their previous Serie A fixture, as they landed a 1-0 win on the road against Udinese. Their winning goal in that fixture was scored by Ciro Immobile from the penalty spot with just under half an hour remaining.
Cremonese fought valiantly against relegation throughout the second half of the season, but ultimately it was in vein as they have lost each of their last two. Last weekend’s heavy defeat against Bologna condemned them back to the second tier, but it would be fair to say that was an uncharacteristic performance based on their outings over the past month or so.
They come into this match having lost each of their previous two in Serie A, while they have conceded seven across their last two matches. Meanwhile, they have allowed the second-highest number of goals in the Italian top-flight this term, and have won just one more than rock-bottom Sampdoria.
Lazio holds a healthy advantage in the fixture between these sides since 2010. There have only been two meetings over that period, with Lazio claiming wins on both occasions. Both wins have come by a 4-0 scoreline, including the win that was achieved in the previous encounter between the sides in September.
There will be a feel-good mood around the Stadio Olimpico this weekend after Lazio’s return to the Champions League was confirmed. We expect the celebrations to continue on the pitch this weekend, as we would be incredibly surprised if Lazio aren’t able to claim maximum points against Cremonese in front of their home fans.
