There will be pressure on both Lazio and Cagliari in Serie A on Saturday, as both Italian sides will be looking to get back on track after disappointing results. But, which side will get the points that they require to move up the league standings?
It hasn’t been the season that many connected with Lazio would have been expecting this term, as the Italian giants find themselves in the bottom half of the standings after 13 rounds of matches. Lazio have won just five of their matches so far this term, but their chances of finishing in a European spot could be aided if they land maximum points this weekend.
A victory would move them into the top half of the standings, and within four points of the Champions League spots. However, they will need to reverse their recent form, as they have gone three without a win in Serie A. Meanwhile, they have suffered defeats in two of their previous three matches. Their most recent loss was suffered on the road last weekend, as they were beaten 2-1 by Salernitana.
There will also be questions to answer for Cagliari this weekend, as the Italian side have also made a poor start to the new season. They come into the weekend sitting outside the bottom three on goal difference, as they have recorded just two wins from their opening 13 matches this term.
However, both of their victories have come in their last four matches in the competition. But, a positive run of form was ended before the international break, as they fell to a defeat. They weren’t able to get back to winning ways last weekend after playing out a 1-1 draw against Monza at home.
Lazio will take confidence from their record in this fixture, as they are unbeaten in their last 16 Serie A matches against Cagliari. Meanwhile, they have picked up victories in seven of the previous eight. However, this exact fixture last term ended in a 2-2 draw in September.
Neither of these sides have made the start to the season that they would have been hoping for, and therefore, there will be pressure on both this weekend. However, it is challenging to overlook Lazio’s healthy advantage in the overall record, meaning that the preference is for a home win.
